– Alcohol-free events offer family entertainment featuring local talent, two fireworks shows –

For 14 years, First Night Akron has offered New Year’s Eve entertainment for families and anyone who doesn’t want to spend the last night of the old year and the first morning of the New Year drinking and cavorting.

The alcohol-free event commandeers downtown Akron and gathers an array of largely local talent including musicians, artists and others for seven hours of activities all leading up to the big firework finale at the stroke of midnight. There is also a Kids Fireworks Show at 9 p.m.

Over the years, First Night officials have constantly tweaked the format to maximize the fun all while trying to take into account the mercurial nature of Ohio weather.

If the holidays have you scrambling for party-worthy grub, consider crostini (Italian for bread with stuff piled on it).

The beauty of crostini is that the components often can be prepared ahead of time. The bread, for example, can be sliced, drizzled with olive oil and toasted up to a day in advance. Just let the slices cool completely and store them in an airtight container until needed.

All you need to do is sort out what to put on it. You can go the easy route and smear some soft goat cheese over each slice, then sprinkle them with fresh thyme leaves and drizzle them with honey.

Or you could top each with a folded slice of prosciutto and a sliver of Parmesan cheese. Pop them in a 300-degree oven for 5 minutes, or until just warmed through (but don’t let the cheese melt).

Sweet and savory work well, too. Try a smear of cream cheese topped with pepper jelly and thinly sliced scallion. Or substitute a bit of smoked salmon for the jelly for a bagel and lox treatment.

– Tradition says it will bring you prosperity in the new year –

Southerners eat black-eyed peas, Italians serve lentils, but in Northeast Ohio, the most popular way to ring in the new year is by smelling up the kitchen with a steaming pot of sauerkraut and pork.

There are plenty of reasons why sauerkraut and pork is considered the traditional New Year’s dinner here. Most of them are tied to folklore or ethnic traditions — all of which claim that eating sauerkraut (or cabbage) and pork will bring good luck and prosperity in the new year.

A Pennsylvania Dutch tradition says that it’s good luck to eat pork for the new year because pigs forage forward for their food and don’t look back.

Immigrants from Germany and across Eastern Europe brought the sauerkraut and pork tradition to Northeast Ohio. The practice probably has more to do with harvest and slaughter times than predicting good fortune.

The Salvation Army of Summit County’s Red Kettle Campaign raised $406,841 exceeding the $400,000 goal.

The campaign wrapped up Dec. 24.

Capt. James Betts had hoped to not have a repeat of last year, when lagging donations prompted the charity to extend the campaign from Dec. 24 through Dec. 31.

”We are delighted to have a successful end to the campaign in this challenging year,” said Capt. James Betts of the Summit Salvation Army.
